IMX Staff Picks :: Sónar Reykjavík
February 8th, 2017 | In The Spotlight
Anyhow, we at IMX are super excited for the festival, and as usual we wrote down our top 3 picks, just in case you need any inspiration… Sigtriggur, our boss even made his selections rhyme, which quite frankly makes the rest of us look like chumps…
Sigtryggur Baldursson : IMX Director/Benevolent Rhyming Dictator:
Her new stuff is very ambitious
aurally both interesting and delicious
Múm man on a solo spree
hotly tipped for funny/free
sparks my curiosity
likely I will look and see.
Punky dancy epic fun stuff.
a little sweet and plenty ruff
and a drummer with a mask.
what more can you ask.
Anna Ásthildur – Project Manager/Berlin Based Goddess:
Exos & Blawan
These are two of my favorites, uniting into one set. Back-to-back.
Pretty sure this will be the best set of the festival.
After a critically acclaimed EP release last year, Sigrún has been making waves in the Icelandic music scene. Can’t wait to see the live set.
Icelandic rap, I don’t know, it’s a thing.
Megan Horan – Editor/Cosmic Weirdo
Everyone is banging on about Hatari, but for good reason. Recently awarded ‘Best Live Band’ in the Grapevine Music Awards, they are a ferocious act to watch, stand too close and you may end with Matthías spit in your eye. I hear some people like that sort of thing.
I’ve yet to see The Bubblegum Bitch in real life, but from what I’ve heard so far, I’m into seeing her strut her stuff.
Performing his solo work for the first time ever, I am pretty intrigued as to what is going to come out, given he’s such an integral part to FM Belfast and múm, which, stylistically couldn’t be further apart if you tried. I have no idea in which direction he’ll be leaning…
Dorota – Intern/Polish Princess:
If you like the sound of his band SYKUR, you might be fully satisfied with Halldór solo show. I believe that his other projects will be influencing his set during the Sónar Reykjavik. So far, it looks his live performance will be full of robotic melodies with some energised beats and intriguing vocals. Should be interesting!
If you are eager to step into the time machine and get into the 80’s – definitely don’t miss Berndsen show. The band will treat you with a synth-pop music and a bit retro & old-fashioned aesthetics. The show will rather cheer you up and get into the very positive mood even tough they may also play some dark tunes in between his hit songs.
It’s been a while since I heard this band live and it will be a pure pleasure to get into their live performance energy again. The fact that GusGus is about to drop out their new album soon should make feel excited everyone even more. New tunes mixed with some old tracks will create a splendid show I bet!
