The L.A Phil’s Reykjavík Festival :: Kicks Off This Week!
April 3rd, 2017 | News
The long awaited Reykjavík Festival is officially opening this week at the infamous Walt Disney Concert Hall!
The venue is set, the bands are getting ready to fly in, Reykjavík will be a ghost-town (bar the tourists, of course) as all the musicians in town appear to be playing at the extravaganza.
The LA Weekly basically called the whole shebang as “The Reykjavik Festival Is Basically Coachella for Fans of Icelandic Music”
Not ONLY are these amazing performances happening, the event also features visual art from Icelandic artists Shoplifter (Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir) and Siggi Eggertsson, and the U.S. premiere of the film Driving at the Speed of the Nordic Sun by Xárene Eskander, with music by Daníel Bjarnason.
It’s a veritable sensory overload!
There are so many other rich performances happening within the festival including:
Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who alongside orchestral ensembles will reimagine the chillingly elegant music from his several solo albums, including the recent Orphée (Deutsche Grammophon) and selections from his highly regarded film scores, which include Prisoners and The Theory of Everything.
Reykjavík’s Bedroom Community, marks its tenth anniversary with label founders Valgeir Sigurðsson, Daníel Bjarnason, Jodie Landau, Nico Muhly, and many others. The Whale Watching Tour is getting a revival in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
The festival begins with a very interesting child friendly and inclusive performance from The Toyota Symphonies For Youth : Maximus Musicus.
Conducted by Daníel Bjarnason
