New Music You Need To Hear :: YouYou, AlVIA, Sólstafir & Casio Fatso
June 2nd, 2017 | News
It’s June already? How did that happen? With Summer Solstice Festival marking out the longest days of the year in Iceland – we bring you some of the best new releases of recent times.
YouYou – Watershed
YouYou is an international yet Icelandic project, rooted in dreamy indie rock but driven by electronic beats. YouYou are four Icelandic musicians, based in Reykjavik, Copenhagen and London, with diverse musical backgrounds including indie rock, chart-topping country, and experimental electronic music to name a few. Some have worked with each other on various projects, while for others, YouYou is a fresh start. YouYou is centered around Snorri Gunnarson’s haunting songs and lyrics, layered and textured by the other band members, Guðmundur Annas Árnason, Kristinn Jón Arnarson and Valur Einarsson.
Casio Fatso – Echoes Of The Nineties
‘Echoes Of The Nineties’, the second album by Icelandic rockers Casio Fatso is so aptly titled it had me pausing it in places to try and find the exact Nirvana riff’s that they have uh…”echoed”. That being said, the whole album is melodically tenacious and throwback while clearly infuriated by more modern headaches. It drifts between hardcore call-to-arms style tracks like – ‘Putin’ and the brutally anthemic ‘Between The City And The Stars’. It’s the album we have all wanted Billy Corgan to make, for the past 20 years – but the jokes on him as Casio Fatso have got there first.
AlVIA – Elegant Hoe
Elegant Hoe is slow paced and patient while having that lively and abrupt trap power. The marriage of hurried hi-hats and sluggish bass tends to remind you of the start of a big Saturday night out while sounding like 6am the next morning. Alvia uses ‘Elegant Hoe’ to emphasize that all of the hours in between – belong to her.
Sólstafir – Silfur-Refur
Yes, Berdreyminn is a heavy metal record but Sólstafir have created a psychedelic and triumphant world which opens up countless landscapes as it dips and rises. Silfur-Refur is a mightily elemental new single, growing from a soft breathe to a wild enveloping smoke. Check out the new video below.
