Vök Album Tour & New Video :: Show Me
March 6th, 2017 | In The Spotlight
Things are starting to heat up in the Vök camp, they recently signed a record deal with famed Nettwerk Records, they also just announced a massive European tour to support their debut album Figure which comes out April 28th.
Watch the brand new video for their track ‘Show Me’ below.
The feeling of drama and desire in their music is echoed in the band’s new video for the track, directed by Hörður Freyr Brynjarsson. Shot in the middle of Iceland’s winter the video utilises the dark, casting its scenes in a deep, gloomy hue. Brynjarsson contrasts Iceland’s natural darkness with his use of neon and fluorescent light, making every splash of colour, from the headlights of a car to the vibrant yellow of a cocktail into a major event in the visual. There’s much more to the video than just aesthetics, however, and as the track reshapes itself from verse to chorus, its story unfolds, drawing the listener further into Vök’s haunting world.
The band will release their highly anticipated debut studio album Figure on April 28th, 2017 via Nettwerk. Recorded with producer and Jack Garrett collaborator Brett Cox, the album follows on from their critically acclaimed EPs “Tension” (2013) and “Circles” (2015) and sees the Reykjavík based band taking their sound to new heights.
Figure is full of distorted pulses, near-whispered melodies, echoing guitars and dreamy hooks, and influenced by everything from The Weeknd and Little Dragon to existential sci-fi cinema, their ambitious first full-length spans a whole spectrum of sounds and emotions. “Anger, obsession, negligence, death, love, happiness and hope,” lists vocalist Margrét Rán, who began the band with saxophonist Andri Már in snowy, beautiful Reykjavík in early 2013.
For Vök, Figure has been three life-changing years in the making. After winning Icelandic rising talent contest Músíktilraunir (previously winners include Of Monsters and Men, Mammút, and Samaris) within months of forming, the group – instrumentalist Ólafur Alexander and new addition Einar Stef on drums – marked themselves out as innovative makers of smart, smouldering jams on 2015 EP Circles. Hailed by Vice’s Noisey as “channelling the Beach soundtrack via 1980s synth pop and the modern sexiness of The Knife,” that EP won them plenty of critical praise.
Figure was mostly written in Margret’s cosy studio in Reykjavik, over “endless cups of coffee” in front of spectacular views of the city they call home. The tracks were then taken to drummer Einar’s home studio, where they recorded with producer Brett Cox, who was recently nominated for Young Producer of the Year at the Music Producers Guild Awards and whose stamp is keenly felt on the finely detailed Figure.
Vök will tour throughout 2017 in support of Figure – list of current confirmed dates below:
